Nijou Castle was built in 1603 as the official residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of Japan. The entire castle grounds occupy 250,000 square meters, 7,300 of which are buildings. Although only one storey, the castle interior is a maze of traditional tatami rooms and sliding doors covered in traditional paintings and carvings.
