Gion is a large commercial area of Kyoto that is historically famous as a pleasure area. Even today, this is where traditional Geisha still practice their arts. However, that aspect of Gion is very exclusive and closed, and the best the average tourist can hope for is to catch a glimpse of a Geisha or Maiko (Geisha's apprentice) hurrying along the streets.
