Within the columns of the main gate to Todaiji, there are two enormous 25' wooden statues of the "Benevolent Kings" whose frightening scowls prevent evil-doers from entering the temple. This one and his partner were carved in the 13th century by Unkei and Kaikei after the style of the Sung Dynasty in China.
