I'm currently a graduate student at Indiana University double majoring in Linguistics and Cognitive Science.
My interests in these two areas are all over the field, but primarily I work on computational models of language that are focused on
cognitive plausibility. I.e. I'm interested in how things do work, not necessarily how we can make things work. Of course,
I believe at some point these two approaches will converge... My best second language is Japanese so it tends to be the language I focus on. I'm particularly interested in
tense and aspect systems and the acquisition of same.
I also teach on campus - there are some links to the various classes that I have taught
Shad Valley
Shad Valley is a month long intensive program in Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship for highly talented
highschool students. It's taught at nine campuses across Canada and one in Scotland. I had the opportunity to participate on the
program in 1991 (Acadia Campus) and always had the intent of coming back one day. In 1999 I pestered the Calgary campus's program
director until he gave me a job and so since then I have spent my Julys teaching grad-level topics in artificial intelligence to the
most motivated, exciting student you'll find anywhere. Shad Valley is an indescribably profound experience even for staff members and
it is truly one of the most gratifying things that I do.
English Express
While I was living in Japan I began writing for an English learning magazine called "English Express" put out
by CNN in Japan. I've been writing for them since then, telecommuting monthly articles.
OUTLOOKS
OUTLOOKS is a nationally distributed Canadian newspaper for the gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender community. I've been writing for them since November 2000 on a variety of topics including travel, linguistics,
and GLBT scientific icons.
Web Design
Aside from my own pages, I've also been employed to do a lot of web-design on campus.
